Heavy rain, flooding reported as storm passes through
WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - Tropical conditions impacted the Wilmington area Wednesday, bringing heavy rain and flooding to the region.
Rainfall totals
According to the National Weather Service, Wilmington received 3.5 inches of rain in a 24-hour period. This rainfall caused flooding in several areas of the city, including Market Street and College Road.
Flooding reported
The flooding made some roads impassable, and several vehicles were stranded in high water. The Wilmington Police Department urged drivers to avoid flooded areas and to use caution when driving in wet conditions.
First responders on scene
First responders were on the scene to help stranded motorists and to clear debris from roadways. The Wilmington Fire Department also responded to several reports of downed trees and power lines.
Power outages
The heavy rain and flooding also caused power outages in some parts of the Wilmington area. According to Duke Energy, approximately 2,000 customers were without power at the height of the storm.
Schools closed
Several schools in the Wilmington area were closed Wednesday due to the weather conditions. The University of North Carolina Wilmington also canceled classes for the day.
Tropical storm warning discontinued
The National Hurricane Center has discontinued the tropical storm warning for the Wilmington area. However, the NWS is still urging residents to be aware of the potential for additional rainfall and flooding.
