Gerrit Cole's Gem, Soto's Heroics Give Yankees Thrilling Win
Cole Dominates on Mound
Gerrit Cole delivered a masterful performance on the mound for the New York Yankees, tossing a complete-game shutout against the San Diego Padres on Saturday night. Cole allowed just three hits and two walks while striking out 12 batters, improving his record to 10-4 on the season.
The Yankees' ace was in complete control from the outset, retiring the first 10 batters he faced before allowing a single to Ha-seong Kim in the fourth inning. He worked quickly and efficiently, throwing just 102 pitches over nine innings.
Soto's Late Heroics
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the eighth inning, when Juan Soto came through with a clutch two-out RBI single to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead. Soto, who was 0-for-4 with two strikeouts prior to his game-winning hit, came up big when his team needed him most.
The Yankees added two more runs in the ninth inning on a double by Aaron Judge and a sacrifice fly by Giancarlo Stanton to extend their lead to 3-0. Aroldis Chapman came on to close out the game in the ninth, striking out two batters to seal the victory.
Yankees Win Series
The Yankees' win gives them a 2-1 lead in the three-game series against the Padres. The two teams will face off in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Yankee Stadium.
